Solidly built at 196cm and 92kg, Chris Melican joined Glenelg from South Gambier and proved a useful addition to the Bays’ list. Utilised at full forward early in his career, he later developed into a fine tap ruckman, adept at generating forward surges. He was also handy around the ground, with strong high marking a feature of his play. Between 1988 and 1992 he played 90 SANFL games for the Tigers and kicked 39 goals. Losing grand finals against Port Adelaide in 1988 and 1990 were the closest he came to realising the principal aim of almost every footballer, which is to play in a premiership-winning side.
