Clem Goonan played initially with Ovens and King Football League club Whorouhly where he won a competition best and fairest award in 1958. On the strength of this achievement at least four VFL clubs expressed interest in procuring his services, but he opted instead to move to Myrtleford of the Ovens and Murray Football League. Eventually, he sought and was granted a clearance to South Melbourne where he debuted in 1961. A defender who had an occasional run on the ball, he played just three games in his first season, before becoming a regular senior player in 1962. He ended up playing 50 VFL games and scoring two goals for the Swans in four seasons. After quitting the VFL scene Goonan played for Albury for a time, and after that had a stint as captain-coach of Rutherglen. In 2006 he was inducted into the Ovens and King Football League Hall of Fame.
