Darren Collins was something of a football journeyman who never really settled long enough at any of his clubs to have more than a minimal impact. Originally from East Reservoir, he was recruited by Collingwood and made his senior debut in 1985 while still aged just 17. A rover, he boasted impressive pace, but struggled to hold down a place in the strong Magpie line-up. In two seasons with the club he played 21 games and scored 28 goals.

The 1987 season found him at Footscray where, initially at least, he struggled, making just a single appearance in his debut season, before improving somewhat to play 13 times in 1988 and 10 in 1989. He registered the impressive tally of 37 goals during his time at the Western Oval. On being de-listed by the Bulldogs he signed for Port Melbourne in the VFA only to handed an AFL lifeline in the 1990 Mid-Season Draft when Fitzroy opted to select him. Towards the end of the season he played four games for the Lions but these proved to be the last top level appearances of his career.
