A highly talented defender, he was the father of Don, Denis, Edward junior and John, all of whom played for Melbourne. He was one of the University Football Club’s star players during the club’s fleeting involvement in the VFL. Between 1908 and 1912 he played 60 games and kicked 8 goals.
