Corrie Gardner was a clever wingman who made position well and boasted considerable pace. He played 12 VFL games for Essendon in 1898-9 and then was cleared to Melbourne shortly before the start of a 1900 season which would end with the Reds overcoming Fitzroy in the grand final. Gardner lined up in his customary wing position in a match that was the undoubted highlight of his playing career. When that career came to an end in 1905 he had added 48 games to his ledger without registering a goal.
Apart from his proficiency as a footballer Corrie Gardner was a champion hurdler. He missed the entire 1904 football season in order to compete for Australia at that year’s St Louis Olympics. He actually comprised half of the Australian team as he only had one other team mate.
