After playing 17 WAFL games for Claremont in 1993 Daniel Southern (he hates being called Danny) joined Footscray, already suffering from the knee problems which would ultimately bring his football career to a premature end. Probably best remembered for a couple of unsavoury on-field altercations with West Coast Eagles opponents he was actually, when fit, a fine footballer. The Bulldogs mainly used him in defence but he could also pinch hit to good effect up forward. Between 1994 and 2000 he played 103 AFL games and kicked 28 goals.

Southern has long had a well documented fascination with Africa and its cultures and has lived in Egypt since 2004.
