After playing his early football with North Adelaide Danny Morton was taken by Fitzroy with pick 70 in the 1992 National Draft. Lightly built and lively, he could play as a rover and small forward as well as, on occasion, in a back pocket. During his first three seasons with the Lions he struggled to obtain selection, but in 1996 he had a good campaign, playing 16 games and holding his own in a side that was on the verge of extinction.

After 30 AFL games and 17 goals, but with no club, Morton nominated for the draft, and was picked up by Port Adelaide, which would be making its debut in the competition in 1997. In practice, Morton spent the whole of that 1997 season back in the SANFL with his original club, North Adelaide, winning a best and fairest award before finally making his debut with the Power the following year. Despite a handful of stand-out performances it was apparent that he was essentially a fringe player, and it was not really a surprise when he was de-listed in 2000, having played 20 games and scored 17 goals for Port.

In 2001-2 Morton rounded off his playing career in the SANFL, although with Norwood rather than North Adelaide. He had a strong first season before injuries took their toll in his second, prompting his retirement with one year of his contract still to go. The SANFL portions of his career saw him play 45 games and score 49 goals with North followed by 33 appearances and 42 goals for the Redlegs.
