An on-baller who tended to be deployed as a tagger early in his career before developing into a more attacking player, Darren Baxter gave fine service to Footscray in 129 VFL games between 1984 and 1992. Over that period his improvement was steady but noticeable and it therefore came as something of a surprise when he was traded to Hawthorn ahead of the 1993 season in return for two late draft picks. In two years with the Hawks he continued to catch the eye, playing another 27 games and, just as he had done during his final seasons at Footscray, regularly racking up sizeable possession tallies.
