Darryl Poole was a high quality key forward and occasional ruckman who was prevented by groin problems from reaching heights commensurate with his talent. He also had temperament issues, resulting in a number of visits to the tribunal. Some of his best football was played in the SANFL, with Port Adelaide prior to 1997, and thereafter with Port Magpies. His 86 SANFL games between 1991 and 2003 included the grand final triumphs of 1995 against Central District and 1999 against Norwood. After the 1999 match he won the Jack Oatey Medal for best afield, and he won the Magpies’ best and fairest award the same year. He was club skipper in his last three seasons. His AFL career with Port Adelaide saw his efforts cruelly undermined by the aforementioned injury woes, and he managed just 24 appearances between 1997 and 1999.
