Originally from Kurrawang in Western Australia, Dave Ferguson played his early football for Kalgoorlie City in the Goldfields Football Association, before being recruited by Geelong in 1924. A forward during his time in the west, he was transformed at Geelong into a rugged, powerful, high quality defender, capable of playing anywhere in the backlines. He took a memorable match-saving mark while falling backwards during the closing moments of the 1925 flag decider against Collingwood. His time with the Cats spanned the years 1924-5 and 1927-8 (he returned to the goldfields in 1926) and saw him play 39 games and score five goals. He returned to the VFL in 1931 with North Melbourne, playing seven games for the year without kicking a goal.
