David O’Donoghue was a resolute, close-checking defender who was often given the task of nullifying the opposition’s most dangerous forward. In 1908 and 1909 he did this to consistently telling effect, but for the remainder of his career he was essentially a fringe player, and did not achieve selection in either the 1910 grand final against Carlton (which the Magpies won) or the following year’s losing affair against Essendon. Between 1907 and 1911 O’Donoghue played 53 VFL games for Collingwood without registering a goal.
