After playing under nineteens football with Geelong David Bolton joined Woodville for whom he played 51 SANFL games and kicked 28 goals in 1982-3, maturing as a footballer all the while. The 1984 season saw him back at Geelong where, playing mainly on the wing, he exhibited exceptional pace and toughness, and earned selection for the Victorian state of origin team, having earlier played for South Australia.

After 28 VFL games and 11 goals in two seasons with the Cats Bolton crossed to Sydney where, from 1986 to 1991, he added a final 95 games and 46 goals, in the process producing some of the best football of his career. In 1986 he was chosen to represent Australia against the visiting Irish International Rules side. Masking a nonsense of the state of origin concept, he also played for New South Wales, making him one of a rare group of footballers to have featured for three different state of origin teams.
