One of the quickest players of his time, wingman Denis Modra gave Norwood 142 games of sterling service between 1960 and 1970. His tally of games would have been much higher had he not been such a frequent victim of injury. A sure ball handler and a probing kick, Modra was perhaps unfortunate never to have been selected to represent South Australia. He was one of Norwood’s best against West Adelaide in the losing Grand Final of 1961. For a time during the mid-sixties, Modra combined with Peter Vertudaches to give the Redlegs arguably the best and most damaging pair of wingmen in the SANFL.
