Des Crawley debuted with Sturt in 1940 and experienced the thrill of playing in a premiership-winning team at the first time of asking. An ultra-solid defender, he was most commonly utilised on a half back flank, the position he occupied in both the 1940 grand final defeat of South Adelaide and the following season’s flag decider, when the Blues lowered their colours to Norwood. In the 1941 game Crawley was among his team’s best players, despite having to struggle with a leg injury sustained early on. In 1940-1 and from 1946 to 1949 he played 88 SANFL games and scored 12 goals.
