Desmond Foster umpired 367 SANFL games including the Grand Final of 1976 as sole umpire, and those of 1978, 1980 and 1982 under the two-umpire system. He won the Golden Whistle Award as the SANFL’s umpire of the year twice, and after his retirement from umpiring served from 1992 to 1995 as the league’s full time director of umpiring, having earlier held the position for a year on a part time basis.
