A superbly skilled and scrupulously fair centreman, Geelong's Dick Grigg was felt by some to be the best player in the VFL for much of his 194-game league career which commenced in 1904. A near automatic state selection, he marked brilliantly, had tremendous pace, and was one of the best kicks in the game. He was Geelong's best and fairest player in 1910, 1911, 1912 and 1914. (His victory in the 1912 award was only recently unearthed, placing him level with Gary 'Buddha' Hocking as the Cats' most prolific best and fairest winner).
After officially retiring in 1914 he was persuaded to resume briefly, aged thirty-six, when Geelong qualified for the 1921 major round, but unfortunately he proved unable to stop Richmond dumping the Cats from contention in the First Semi Final.
