Frank Dimattina was a clever and resourceful rover who commenced his VFL career with Richmond by playing 33 consecutive games in 1964-5. However, an accidental collision with team mate Paddy Guinane seemed to undermine his confidence, and over the next three seasons he only managed another nine senior appearances. He kicked a total of 43 goals for the Tigers. The 1969 season found him at North Melbourne where he played 14 VFL games and kicked 16 goals over the course of that year and the next. His last stint as a player was at VFA second division club Brunswick where his 64 games from 1971 to 1974 included the losing grand finals of 1971 against Brunswick and 1973 against Caulfield. Frank Dimattina’s son Paul later played AFL football for Footscray/Western Bulldogs.
