Gary Frangalas was a highly capable utility who made his way up through the ranks at South Melbourne/Sydney before making his senior VFL debut in 1983. Courageous, highly mobile and a good kick, he played some fine matches for the Swans in a variety of positions. Between 1983 and 1985 he played 52 VFL games for Sydney and scored 25 goals.

The 1986 season saw Frangalas on the move to Richmond where he endured a trying time with injury and played for the reserves almost three times more often than the seniors. His four season stint with the Tigers saw him make just 17 senior appearances and kick two goals whilst generally failing to recapture the form shown during his time with the Swans.

After playing just reserves football in 1990 Frangalas joined VFA side Dandenong in what would prove to be a premiership year for the club. However, he was prevented by injury from playing in the grand final. In what was his sole season with the Redlegs he played 17 games and booted eight goals.
