Originally from Sandhurst, Frank Coghlan tried out at Carlton without success but then was offered a second chance to play League football by St Kilda. He duly seized the opportunity and went on to give the Saints fine service in 109 V/AFL games between 1986 and 1992, during which he booted 64 goals. A centreman for most of his career he was something of a ‘ball magnet’. For instance, in 1990 he averaged 21.29 disposals per match, while the following year his form was even more eye-catching as he polled a highly creditable nine Brownlow Medal votes.

After leaving the Saints Coghlan returned to his original club Sandhurst and in 1995 he won the Michelsen Medal for best and fairest in the Bendigo Football League.
