A product of the Sandhurst Football Club Frank Roberts was a useful performer for St Kilda in 27 VFL games in 1933-4. Playing mainly as a forward, he kicked tallies of 24 and 20 goals across the two seasons.

After spending the 1935 season back at Sandhurst Roberts returned to the VFL with Melbourne. This time playing chiefly in defence he proved himself a top quality performer, helping the Demons to consecutive grand final wins in 1939-40 as well as twice representing Victoria. In the former grand final, playing on a half back flank, he was a widespread choice as the best player afield in a 53 point thrashing of Collingwood. The Melbourne phase of his career, which spanned the years 1936 to 1941, saw him add 86 games and 5 goals to his respective tallies.
