Fred 'Flops' Phillips was an extremely versatile player who was strong both overhead and at ground level, and who possessed commendable pace and athleticism. A fine kick with either foot, he joined St Kilda from Scotch College in 1924 and went on to become one of the Saints' most renowned players for the better part of a decade. He won his club's best and fairest award in 1930, and represented the VFL in the interstate arena five times. In 1933 he crossed to Hawthorn as captain-coach but died tragically from blood poisoning before the start of the season.
