From Berrigan, Fred Way was a knock ruckman who, when at his peak in his final three seasons, was as good as almost any follower in the business. He could dominate ruck contests because of his strength and prodigious leaping ability, and he was also a handy player around the ground with strong marking and fine anticipation. His VFL career with South Melbourne comprised 81 games in which he booted 14 goals in 1964, 1966 and from 1969 to 1971. He was a member of the Victorian party for the 1969 Adelaide carnival. While playing for his home town club of Berrigan he won an O’Dwyer Medal as the Murray Football League’s best and fairest player in 1968, and played in a flag-winning team the same year.
