Fred Gallagher joined Essendon from Rosebud in 1952 and proved himself a handy player. Initially used across half forward he came into his own when moved to the goal-front, topping the Bombers’ goal kicking list in 1957 with 34 goals. In that season’s grand final loss to Melbourne he contributed three of his team’s seven goals. Gallagher played 84 VFL games and kicked 61 goals in seven seasons with Essendon. In one match against Geelong in 1957 he booted 12 majors.
