As a player, Gavin Luttrell was tenacious and hard-hitting. From 1932 to 1940 he played a club record 212 games for Lefroy, mainly as a wingman, winning the club’s best and fairest award on four consecutive occasions between 1937 and 1940. He was also a regular representative player. In 1941 he joined Longford, where he played until war brought the suspension of league football the following year.

On the resumption of full scale football in 1945 Luttrell was appointed captain-coach of North Launceston, where he enjoyed considerable success, steering the side to five consecutive NTFA flags from 1946 to 1950, plus the 1947, 1929 and 1950 state titles. His last game, at the age of 38, was the 1950 state final in which the Robins downed TFL premier Hobart by 35 points in Hobart.

As a non-playing coach, Gavin Luttrell led the NTFA representative side to an 8-3 record in the four seasons from 1957 to 1960. He became a selector for both NTFA and state teams, as well as working as a football reporter for ‘The Mercury’.

In 1999 he was selected as coach of North Launceston’s official ‘Best Team 1945 to 1999’.
