George Gibson played four VFL games with Essendon, mainly as a half back flanker, in 1906. The 1907 season saw him at Richmond which at the time was in the VFA before commencing in the VFL the following year. Gibson stayed with the Wasps after the transition and all told played 70 games and kicked six goals for the club between 1908 and 1912. He played on the last line of defence for most of his time with Richmond.

After departing the VFL scene George Gibson played for VFA club Brunswick between 1913 and 1915.
