George Nuss was a tough rover in the Leigh Matthews mould who won the J.L. Williams Medal for the 'best and manliest player in the Commonwealth' at the 1932 and 1933 national schoolboy carnivals. He forged a splendid career with Mayne despite a lengthy suspension which was overturned after a Queen's pardon. Nuss played for Queensland from 1938 to 1949 and was regarded by many as being among the best players of his era.
