His playing career was only comparatively brief but Gordon Day was indisputably a footballer of real talent. Playing mostly as a centreman, he made 61 senior appearances for Sturt from 1933 to 1937, kicking 30 goals. He played in the pivot in the Blues’ 1936 grand final loss to Port Adelaide. Some idea of the esteem in which he was held can be gauged from the fact that he was chosen to represent South Australia seven times in five seasons.
