Graeme Johnstone joined Essendon from Wesley College in 1961 and, after playing for the under nineteens he made his senior VFL debut the following year. Serviceable rather than brilliant, he was never an automatic choice for the team but had the good fortune to play in the winning grand finals of 1962 against Carlton and 1965 against St Kilda. His Essendon career comprised 70 games between 1962 and 1967 and saw him kick 33 goals.

After leaving the Bombers Johnston spent the 1968 season with Preston in the VFA and started on the bench in that season's winning first division grand final against Prahran.
