Having progressed through the grades at Richmond Graham Gaunt made his senior VFL debut in 1972. However, he struggled to break into the strong Tigers line-up on a consistent basis and after playing just a couple of games he crossed to Oakleigh in the VFA where he played from 1973 until midway through the 1976 season, whereupon he returned to Richmond. This second stint with the Tigers saw him add 17 VFL games to his career tally in 1976 and 1977.

Boasting great stamina and neat ball handling skills Gaunt clearly still had plenty to offer the right club, and he went some way towards proving this by producing some fine football for Melbourne where he transferred in 1978. Capable of playing as a ruck-rover or either a half forward or half back flank, he played 69 games and registered 32 goals for the Demons between 1978 and 1982.
