Greg Tate was a diminutive, highly elusive rover and forward pocket whose kicking was exceptional, whether short, crisp stab passes onto a team mate’s chest or prodigious punts and drop kicks. He joined Essendon from North Essendon Methodists and went on to play 70 VFL game and kick 95 goals from 1947 to 1951. He was unlucky to miss the Bombers’ winning grand finals of 1949 and 1950 with injury. He was a reserve in the losing grand final team of 1947, while his last game in an Essendon jumper was the 1951 flag decider, in which Geelong accounted for the Dons by 11 points. Occupying a forward pocket, Tate contributed a goal to his side’s tally of 10.10, but otherwise his performance was unremarkable.
