Don Gross was a useful rover or wingman who was Essendon through and through. He commenced with the Bombers in 1965 and later that season suffered the heartache of missing the club's winning grand final against St Kilda after he broke his collarbone in the preliminary final defeat of Collingwood. When Essendon next reached the grand final in 1968 he was named as a reserve. Between 1965 and 1974 Gross played 121 VFL games and kicked 105 goals for the Bombers and later coached both the club's seconds and under nineteens.
