Tony Hall joined Glenelg from Glengowrie High School and gave the club fine service in 92 SANFL games between 1983 and 1987. An excellent mark and kick, he was the Bays' top goal kicker with 73 goals in 1986, the same season that saw him earn the Jack Oatey Medal for his six-goal best afield performance from centre half forward in the Grand Final defeat of North Adelaide. Hall had also played in the previous season's Grand Final triumph over the same opposition.

In 1988 Hall crossed to the VFL where he joined Hawthorn, helping the side to a flag and running fourth in the Brownlow voting in his debut season. He suffered the crushing set back of a wrecked knee in 1989 whilst representing South Australia against Victoria on the MCG, but he made a courageous and speedy recovery to be back in action within less than a year. In 1991 he played in another Hawk premiership team, and had played 97 games and kicked 144 goals for the club by the time he returned home to South Australia, to join the Crows, at the end of the 1993 season.

During his time with Adelaide Hall was beset by injury woes and managed just 17 games in two seasons. In 1995 he spent much of the season back at Glenelg, taking his final tally of games with the club to 103.
