Unostentatious to a tee, Hartley Pike was nevertheless a highly effective back pocket as well as a vital cog in the Norwood machine. In 1929 he was a key contributor to the Redlegs’ 41 point challenge final defeat of Port Adelaide. A year earlier he had played in the losing flag decider against the same opponent. Between 1928 and 1932 he played a total of 67 SANFL games. As was par for the course for defenders of this era he failed to register a single goal during his career.
