Half forward flank specialist Doug Heywood debuted for Melbourne in 1943 en route to a career tally of 54 games, in which he kicked 30 goals. He missed the 1945 season while serving in the RAAF, and from 1946 to 1948 he played for University Blacks in the VAFA, including premierships in all three years. Shortly after the last of these flag wins Heywood was surprisingly called up by Melbourne, who still retained his registration as a player, for the club’s preliminary final clash with Collingwood. Also recalled was Heywood’s Blacks team mate Denis Cordner who, like Heywood, had last played for the Demons four years earlier. Melbourne duly won the game, and Heywood retained his place in the team for the grand final encounter with Melbourne, which ended in a draw. Unfortunately for Heywood he was omitted from the team for the replay, in which the Demons triumphed.
Heywood continued with Melbourne until 1951, but his sole chance of premiership glory had passed.
