Norm Hillard joined Hawthorn from Carlton seconds and went on to give the Mayblooms solid rather than spectacular service, chiefly as a forward, in 32 VFL games in 1933 and 1936-7 during which he kicked 57 goals.

It was after crossing to Fitzroy, however, that he really came into his own, playing in the new position for him of centre half back. The high-point of his career was the 1944 grand final in which the ‘Roys defeated Richmond and Hillard was the best player afield. The Fitzroy phase of his career ran from 1939 to 1946 and saw him register 94 games and a dozen goals.
