Having played 13 games and scored seven goals in 1908 for Brighton in the VFA as a forward Hughie Odgers was recruited by Melbourne with the intention of being used in the same role. However, he ended up playing virtually all of his VFL career with the Reds either as a centreman or in defence. That career encompassed the years 1909 to 1912 and 1920, during which he played 59 games and scored two goals.
