Mostly used across half back, but capable of playing almost anywhere, Jack Ross was a key component in the powerful Collingwood machine of the 1930s. Despite standing only 173cm in height he played some of his best football at centre half back and his wholehearted approach earned him considerable respect among both team mates and supporters. Prior to joining Collingwood he had played for Northcote in the VFA.

Between 1931 and 1940 Ross played 142 VFL games and scored 30 goals for the Magpies. Among his appearances were five straight grand finals, the first two of which were won, with Ross being particularly prominent in the 1936 match which saw Collingwood prevail over South Melbourne by 11 points. His brother Bob also played for both Northcote and Collingwood.
