Versatile and strong, if somewhat ungainly, Jack Symons was probably destined to play for Richmond as he grew up a mere drop kick's distance from Punt Road. He joined the Tigers from Burnley Juniors and made the first of an eventual 111 VFL appearances for the club in 1934. Those appearances included the losing grand finals of 1940 against Melbourne and 1942 against Essendon, but unfortunately for him not the Grand Final win of 1943 (also against Essendon).

Midway through the 1944 season, in a bid to extend his senior career at the top level, he crossed to Fitzroy, and a few months later enjoyed the unexpected bonus of helping his new club to a hard fought, if somewhat surprising, 15-point Grand Final victory over his old one. Symons went on to play 36 games in three seasons with the 'Roys, kicking 58 goals to add to the 71 he had registered with the Tigers.
