James Allan was a runaway winner of the 2007 Magarey Medal, with his tally of 19 votes giving him a five-vote advantage over five other players. A tough, nuggety on-baller or centreman, he was one of the main factors in North Adelaide’s rise to prominence under Andrew Jarman which saw the side get as far as the 2007 grand final, only to lose heavily to Central District. Over the next five seasons, North Adelaide's success was limited but Allan added two more Magarey Medals to his collection, in 2010 and 2011.

Allan returned to his old club Lara for a season in 2013 but 2014 saw him back in the SANFL, this time with Norwood. A wrist injury in round 15 appeared to end his season but he returned in time to be part of the Redlegs' four-point Grand Final Triumph over Port Adelaide.
