Originally from Red Cliffs Jeff Berry was recruited by Richmond and, after playing reserves football in 1977, including the winning grand final at that level against Footscray, made his senior VFL debut in round 21 of the ensuing season. A defender who played mostly in the back pocket or on a half back flank, he found it difficult to establish himself with the Tigers, playing just 10 games without kicking a goal in 1978-9. Meanwhile, he appeared 53 times for the reserves.

After playing once for West Adelaide in 1980 Berry was recruited by Footscray where he enjoyed a more productive time than at Richmond, playing 35 VFL games and booting four goals in three seasons. He then played 17 games and scored 18 goals for VFA first division side Preston in 1982-3 and represented the VFA in the second of those seasons. He later played for Kyabram and Echuca.
