Arguably the pick of St Kilda’s early VFL footballers Joe Hogan actually began with the Saints while the club was still a member of the VFA. In 1895 and 1896 he played 34 VFA games and followed this by 91 VFL appearances between 1897 and 1900 and from 1902 to 1906. Playing mainly at centre half back, his broad range of skills, superb high marking and indomitable demeanour made him a conspicuous on-field presence. Certainly this was the view of opposition teams who often made him an unwarranted focus of stiff-armed tactics.
In 1902 Hogan was appointed skipper of the Saints but the role did not sit well with him and he resigned at the end of the season. Away from football he worked in the legal profession and this sometimes limited his availability. Indeed, in 1901 it caused him to miss the entire season. It was also a contributory factor in his decision to retire in 1906 although it should be pointed out that he had been undermined to some extent by injuries which may well have been another reason.
