After a stand-out junior career at CBC Parade and Assumption College John Bahen was recruited by Fitzroy, where he developed into a useful centreman who was a prodigious kick of the football. From 1962 to 1967 he played 67 VFL games for the Lions and scored 35 goals. After leaving Fitzroy he played 13 games and scored 16 goals for Port Melbourne in the VFA in 1968.
