John Bennett was a handy left-footed forward who, it might be argued, failed to achieve everything his talent warranted at league level. He played 18 VFL games and kicked 16 goals for St Kilda from 1980 to 1983 and also played briefly at Sandringham in the VFA in 1983. He spent the 1984 season at Footscray but only managed three senior appearances and eight goals for the year whilst performing consistently well in the seconds.

The 1985 season saw Bennett back with the Saints where he added a final 17 games and 25 goals over a season and a bit. He returned to Sandringham during the 1986 season and continued with the club until 1989, by which time he had made 53 appearances and scored 201 goals in the black, blue and gold. He was the Zebras’ top goal kicker in 1987 and 1988. He later played successfully for East Brighton, the club with which he had commenced his senior playing career.
