Nicknamed ‘Rex’, John Mossop, who hailed from Penola, was a magnificently built ruckman/forward who moved well, was a capable mark and could be a dominant competitor in the ruck. He commenced his VFL career with Geelong in 1979 and spent eight seasons at the Cattery, playing 134 games and kicking 87 goals as well as claiming the 1982 club best and fairest award. During his time with the Cats he also played interstate football for Victoria. In 1987 he transferred to North Melbourne for whom he played 37 games and kicked 15 goals over the course of a two season stint, but it had always been his intention to return to the family farm in Penola and at the conclusion of the 1988 season, aged twenty-eight, he did so.
