Johnny Gregory was the first North Melbourne footballer to play 150 VFL games. All told, he made 156 appearances for the Shinboners between 1926 and 1935, kicking 5 goals. Most commonly deployed as a half back flanker he enjoyed a particularly fine 1931 season when he polled 10 votes. North Melbourne did not routinely make an award to the season's best and fairest player during Gregory's VFL career but had they done so it is highly likely he would have been the recipient of at least one.

A Victorian interstate representative in 1932 Johnny Gregory was one of three brothers to play VFL football, the others being Harry Gregory (Essendon) and Bruce Gregory (North Melbourne).
