Although he was normally deployed across half forward Ken Mackie was perfectly capable of doing a serviceable job in the backlines when required and in fact could reasonably be described as a utility. After struggling to achieve regular selection at Fitzroy, where he managed just seven games in 1930-1, he spent the 1932 season at Carlton but only played reserves football. In 1933 he joined St Kilda and clearly found the milieu more congenial as he rapidly settled down to become a key member of the side, playing 62 VFL games and registering 55 goals over what proved to be the last half a dozen seasons of his League career.
