Steven Kolyniuk was a gritty, gutsy footballer who enjoyed the adulation of the Footscray faithful. A combination of knee problems, wayward concentration and a tendency to put on weight meant that he was never the most consistent of performers, but throughout his career, even towards the end when he began slowing down, he was capable of bursts of genuine brilliance. As a result one suspects he was invariably one of the first names entered on the team list each week. He made the team list 177 times between 1987 and 2000, kicking 198 goals. He was a Victorian state of origin representative in 1992.
