Hawthorn recruited Lance Wilkinson from amateur club Savings Bank and he proved to be a useful acquisition. Playing mainly as a wingman, although he could also do a job as a crumbing forward, he made 116 senior appearances for the Hawks and kicked 18 goals between 1949 and 1956. He also represented Victoria against South Australia in 1955 having earlier represented the Victorian Amateurs in 1948. After leaving Hawthorn Wilkinson fronted up with VFA club Brighton.
