After playing 26 games without registering a goal for East Perth in 1990 and 1991 Leigh Willison was taken by Geelong with pick 11 of the 1991 National Draft. He failed to set the world alight at the Cattery, managing just three games and four goals in two seasons, whereupon he returned to the Royals.

The 1994 season saw Willison add a final 17 games and four goals for East Perth before crossing to East Fremantle, where he would see out the remainder of his career. He played in the Sharks’ 1998 grand final-winning team against West Perth, but his contribution was limited as he sustained an ankle injury during the match. Earlier that year he had represented Western Australia for the only time in his career, in a loss to South Australia at Football Park.

Willison played the last of his 122 league games for East Fremantle in 2002, the same season which saw him win the Prendergast Medal as the fairest and best player in the WAFL reserves competition. The fact that he was always a dangerous player in the forward lines is indicated by his tally of 174 goals during his time with the Sharks. In both 1996 and 1997 he headed the club’s goal kicking list with hauls of 42 and 32 goals respectively.
