Having played for Brunswick (62 VFA games, 19 goals, 1931-5) and Fitzroy (15 VFL games, four goals 1935-7) Leo Maynes joined Essendon where he proved to be a serviceable performer in 38 VFL games over three and a half seasons, during which he registered seven goals. He also played a lot of reserves football, including the winning grand final of 1941 against Fitzroy. In both 1940 and 1941 he won the Dons’ reserve grade best and fairest award. On a more trivial note, in 1940 he enjoyed the distinction of winning the league ballroom dancing championship.
